Monday morsel: Octobers

Yesterday Modern Mrs. Darcy posted part of this quote, and since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I thought I'd use it today.

From L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables:

"Oh, Marilla," [Anne] exclaimed one Saturday morning, coming dancing in with her arms full of gorgeous boughs, "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November, wouldn't it? Look at these maple branches. Don't they give you a thrill--several thrills?”

  1. "several thrills" - precisely.

    1. One's life cannot be a perfect graveyard of buried hopes when there's that kind of colour outside! (That's my favourite "Anne" line.)

    2. I love this one:

"Dear old world," [Anne] murmured, "you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you."

    3. And now I'm getting sucked into this scene. Here's the next few lines:

"Halfway down the hill a tall lad came whistling out of a gate before the Blythe homestead. It was Gilbert, and the whistle died on his lips as he recognized Anne. He lifted his cap courteously, but he would have passed on in silence, if Anne had not stopped and held out her hand.

'Gilbert," she said, with scarlet cheeks, 'I want to thank you for giving up the school for me. It was very good of you--and I want you to know that I appreciate it.'

Gilbert took the offered hand eagerly.

'It wasn't particularly good of me at all, Anne. I was pleased to be able to do you some small service. Are we going to be friends after this? Have you really forgiven me my old fault?'

Anne laughed and tried unsuccessfully to withdraw her hand."

    4. Jeannie, at this moment I'm sipping coffee and watching two deer in my back yard. They're grazing on acorns as maple leaves are falling in a cascade around them. My house is quiet. My little ones are just now starting to stir a bit upstairs. I love to catch up on your blog during peaceful moments like this when I can really savor it! ♥

    5. Thanks for your comments, Adriana. It sounds (but actually I'm not sure) as if that scene with Gilbert happens in the fall, which would be really fitting: there's sadness after Matthew's death and other changes, but there's hope for new life too. I find that encouraging.

Glad you are enjoying the blog. I'm sure you know what I mean when I say that sometimes I just feel blah about blogging -- but just putting little bits out there on a frequent basis is neat, rather than striving for profundity every moment. So anyhoo ... a guest post soon? :-)

    6. I hope so! You're post today about Jonathan's scraps of comfort dovetails perfectly with what I had in mind. I haven't commented on that one yet, but it spoke to me. :-)
